BARNEGAT Police and EMS helped save the life of a newborn child on Tuesday after the child聮s mother gave birth on the front lawn of her home.Elizabeth Whitehead, 21, of Barnegat gave birth at 11 a.m. Tuesday, police said. At the time of the delivery, the baby was not breathing and did not have pulse, according to Lt. Keith Germain, a spokesman for the township police department.Officers Michael Moore and Vincent Damiano arrived at the scene and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the newborn until an ambulance arrived. Moore continued giving the newborn CPR in the back of the ambulance on the way to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, while other personnel treated Whitehead and waited for an additional ambulance.Because of the lifesaving efforts, Germain said the newborn developed a stable heart rhythm and normal breathing en route to the hospital.The newborn was then transferred to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.Whitehead was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center, where she was treated and released, police said.
